Published November 23, 2016
The New South Wales government legislated the first version of strata title, the Conveyancing (Strata Titles) Act, 1961 which came into force on 1 July 1961.
The first strata titled building in Australia (and the world) was Lindsay Gardens, (picture below) 189 Liverpool Road, Burwood, Sydney, a block of 18 units completed and approved on 28 July 1961 by the local council.
As indicated above, strata was invented in Australia, although, other forms of apartment type letting or condominium form of tenure has been found to go back as far as Babylon (2300BC) but more commonly through the western world through the development of apartment type buildings.
